Q I'm worried about my privacy on Facebook. If I restrict my profile to friends, which I have done, is that sufficient enough?A Make sure you check through all the privacy settings available, including those relating to individual applications. Restricting your updates to "friends and networks" is not very useful, especially if you have joined the Australia network. "Friends only" would be the most private. However, no matter how much faith you have in the policies and practices of Facebook or other social networks, don't take your privacy for granted.Q I'm looking for a tool that will let me see how much free space I have on my hard drive and what files or programs take up the most room. I know I can Get Info from Finder but it would be better to get some kind of overall chart. Any suggestions?A Why don't you have a look at GrandPerspective (grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net)? It provides a graphical way of looking at the files on your Mac's hard drive. You'll see instantly if your music collection is hogging the hard drive. It's free software with donations accepted.Q Can I transfer applications from my old Mac to my new one without needing original disks? (Mine were lost moving house.)A Try using the Migration Assistant in OS X. You'll need to make sure both computers are up-to-date. Then open the Migration Assistant under Utilities on both computers, preferably connected with a FireWire cable, and follow the instructions on screen.Q Please remind me of the trick used to get Word to remember which country I'm in. I recently reinstalled and it keeps going back to US spelling. I'm using Windows XP.A The only trick here, really, is to make sure both Word and Windows are employing the same regional settings. Otherwise, the Word dictionary settings will always revert back to what the operating system says. Go to Control Panel, Regional and Language Settings and look under the Languages tab. Click the Details button to get to the input page and make sure English (Australian) is the default. This should apply to new documents created on your machine. To correct a current document, select all the text, go to Tools, then Language and Set Language. You may also have to do this for documents received from others.Nicole ManktelowEmail questions to qa@nicolemanktelow.com
